Nsirimo Amise autonomous community celebrate their iwaji ceremony.

The Iwaji ceremony of the people of Ako-aha in Nsirimo, Umuahia South LGA, Abia State, took place last Saturday, speaking with the village head of Akoaha, High Chief High Chief Sylvester Azubuike Nwichi told the journalists that visited him, that the Iwaji ceremony is a yearly activities.

High Chief Nwichi, who is the oldest among the men in the community, is over 100years. He worked with the late Eze Dr Moses Akpaka, the Imo 1 of Nsirimo, as the traditional prime minister before becoming the village head of the community, after the death of the Eze six years ago.

He described the Iwaji ceremony as a good ceremony in Igbo land, with evidence of of bountiful yam cultivation and harvesting of the king of crops in Igbo land.

He also stated that, the people of Nsirimo Amise, always celebrate their iwaji ceremony on the Saturday afor in the month of August of every year, with the gathering of all the ezeji of the community and also the 21 village heads of the community, with a call to every-person’s in Igbo land to always join in their communities new yam celebration.

In his own contribution, the former president General of Nsirimo Autonomous Community, in Umuahia South LGA of the state, Mr Calitus Alozie Agomuo, who is also an ezeji with his three sons, said the Ezeji title is a title that strictly conferred on only selected individuals on merit.

The former President- General of Nsirimo-Amise Development Union, when speaking with the Journalists shortly after a grand celebration of iwa-ji (New Yam) festival of his Community, hinted that his ascension of revered position of Ezeji was borne out of his remarkable commitment to a mass cultivation and harvesting of the ‘King of the Crop’ in the Igbo land.

Mr Agomou who said, he has served in the ECOWAS Commission for 34-years, is currently the most senior Southeast staff of the Commission, pointing out that the said ezeji title was bestowed on him, since 2014 with his three sons, regretting that the center could no longer hold, since his tenure elapsed as the president-general of the community.

“I took up the title of Eze-ji on the December 29, 2014. I did for myself and my three sons. Which means, my three sons are all Ezeji’s. I did it at the same time for them. My three sons farmers also, ezeji is not something, one can buy with money, but other titles can be buy with money, and not ezeji.

Outlining the criteria for the title, the
Head of Human Resources ECOWAS Commission, Abuja, explained that the title of Ezeji could only be conferred on sons of the soil who have distinguished themselves in Igboland with evidence of bountiful yam cultivation and harvesting.
“Ezeji title is a recognised title in Igboland, given to men who have distinguished themselves in the field of farming yam. It is one title you cannot buy with money.

Adding his voice, Engr Ezeji Patrick Ikechukwu Nwogu, who is the Nsirimo Amise chairman of the traditional leaders, told the journalists that were in the community to observe the Iwaji ceremony, that the ezeji title he is enjoying today, that he inherited it from his maternal home. He said, he is into agriculture for years now. A managing director of his agricultural firm, in the state.

He said, one can buy any other title, but that of Ezeji can not be bought with money, like that chieftaincy title, you can approach one Eze, give him some amount of money and he will take you to his palace and give you a Chieftaincy title.

Stating that, he can not eat the yam, before celebrating it, being an ezeji, he can only eat the yam after celebrating it with relatives, friends and well wishers, saying that today, he want to show the Abia and Imo people, what the Iwaji mean in Igbo land. And because it is our culture in Igbo land, we need to keep it. Any body with ezeji title respect the yam, and the person must be good, the person should not do bad things. Telling our people that it is not fetish, but it is our tradition.
