The Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Senator Ned Nwoko has advocated for the establishment of offices, by major social media platforms in Nigeria.

To him, Facebook, Instagram, X, Tiktok and other major social media handles, should have offices in Nigeria, to facilitate easy accessibility and conflict resolution.

Senator Nwoko who is a member of Senate Committee on Communications,

canvassed this position, during the screening of nominees for the positions of Executive Commissioners of the Nigerian Communications Commission by the Senate Committee on Communications.

Our Correspondent, gathered that the Delta born Senator questioned the NCC about their stance on the compulsory establishment of offices by major social media platforms in Nigeria for economic advancement and efficient dispute resolution.

He argued that “the absence of such offices poses several issues, including limited local representation, missed economic opportunities, and difficulties in redressal.

“If Facebook, for instance, had an office in Nigeria, it would create jobs for Nigerians and the company would be responsible for paying taxes on the business they generate.

“Additionally, they would be easily reachable in the event of litigation, simplifying the resolution of legal or regulatory issues pertaining to content, data privacy, or user rights.

“The current necessity of engaging a lawyer abroad to reach these companies is very costly and negatively impacts the protection of users’ rights.

“Lastly, having these platforms operate within Nigeria would facilitate the transfer of technology, providing training and opportunities to our young people.
