… AS UGANDA PARLIAMENT CONCLUDES 5-DAY CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP AT NILDS.

The Director General National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies,NILDS National Assembly, Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, is advocating the Afrocentric model as against Afro- Eurocentric approach to develop African Sub-region.

Professor Sulaiman stated this at the closing ceremony of a 5-day training workshop for opposition members and members of the Budget Committee of the Parliament of Uganda at the NILDS Permanent Site Abuja.

He said efforts must be geared towards building Africa by Africans using the instrumentality of legislative instruments to advance intra and inter Democratic cultures, knowledge, ethics, and skills as tools for advancements.

The Director General, who noted that Nigeria is a big democratic nation with 25 years of unbroken democracy running a bi- cameral Legislature compared to a brother Africa nation like Uganda with Unicameral parliamentary system, pointed out that both countries have a lot to share and to learn from each other.

While congratulating the trainees for the successful completion of the capacity building training for the 4th consecutive times under topnotch resource persons like six times ranking Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Aba Moro, and others, he said the knowledge garnered should be deployed to interrogate, allocation and implementation of budgets, its impacts on the lives of Ugandans, oversight functions and constructive opposition towards taking the country to a higher pedestals among comity of Nations.

Professor Sulaiman, who assured on further opportunities for trainings at NILDS as well as visit to Uganda by him hopefully within the first quarter of next year, intimated them with the need to come back to take advantage of the “Advance Executive Training Programme” to be co-ordinated by the Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,Professor Attahiru Jega.

In a separate postmortem review of the 5-day capacity building, the Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Parliament of Uganda, Honourable Remigio Achia and the leader of opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi who came to Nigeria for the first time said that they had beneficial engagements and highly rewarding cross- pollination of knowledge and skills that will be useful to their country.

Highlights of the closing ceremony included exchange of banter, presentations of certificates by the Director General NILDS, and the exchange of souvenirs.
