NAF Expands Operational Footprint, Establishes Base In Abia State
…As state government hands over strategic facilities
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has recorded a major milestone in its drive to strengthen national security and expand its operational footprint with the formal handover of newly constructed office and residential facilities, alongside 120 hectares of land, by the Abia State Government for the establishment of a permanent NAF presence in the state.
Speaking during the handing-over ceremony on 31 July 2026, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the development as historic, noting that it marks the first permanent NAF presence in Abia State.
A statement signed by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Abuja on Friday, further informed that the ceremony was attended by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OA Ihejirika (Rtd), and other distinguished dignitaries.
The CAS commended the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening security as a foundation for sustainable development.
The facilities handed over include a modern office complex, a block of 21 self-contained accommodation units, a four-bedroom duplex, two residential blocks comprising six three-bedroom flats and twelve two-bedroom flats, as well as the Certificate of Occupancy for 120 hectares of land at Nsulu.
According to the CAS, the investment represents far more than physical infrastructure, describing it as a strategic contribution to Nigeria’s security architecture that will significantly enhance the NAF’s operational effectiveness in the South-East while creating new opportunities for socio-economic development.
“This is a defining contribution to national defence and stability. It reflects remarkable foresight and patriotism and provides a strong foundation for the Nigerian Air Force to discharge its constitutional responsibilities with greater efficiency,” Air Marshal Aneke said.
The CAS noted that the allocated land offers considerable potential for specialised military training and other advanced operational courses, adding that the NAF would explore the possibility of establishing a military training institution in Abia State, subject to the necessary approvals.
He observed that such an initiative would strengthen national defence capabilities while supporting educational, social and economic opportunities within the state.
“Our presence in Abia State is about more than expanding operational reach; it is about strengthening security, supporting national development and building enduring partnerships that benefit both the Armed Forces and the communities we serve,” he stated.
Governor Otti described the handover as a demonstration of his administration’s firm belief that security remains the foundation for sustainable development and lasting prosperity.
He expressed confidence that the establishment of a permanent NAF presence in Abia State would reinforce peace and stability, improve public confidence and support the state’s economic aspirations.
“Our commitment to supporting the Nigerian Air Force reflects our conviction that a secure environment is indispensable for investment, growth and the well-being of our people. We are proud to partner with the Armed Forces in building a safer, more prosperous Abia State and Nigeria,” the Governor said.
Air Marshal Aneke further praised the Governor’s transformational leadership, describing the initiative as an outstanding example of effective civil-military collaboration and a demonstration of the critical role of strategic partnerships in advancing national security.
He assured the Governor and the people of Abia State that the NAF would justify the confidence reposed in it through disciplined service, responsible stewardship and unwavering professionalism.
“Your Excellency has kept your promises to the Nigerian Air Force, and we will honour that trust by ensuring these facilities are effectively utilised and responsibly managed in the service of peace, security and national development,” the CAS affirmed.
The ceremony marks another significant step in advancing collaboration between the Nigerian Air Force and sub-national governments in support of national security objectives.
By establishing a permanent operational presence in Abia State, the NAF is poised to enhance its responsiveness to emerging security challenges while reinforcing its commitment to protecting lives and property.
