As part of efforts to ensure that more girls gain access to Basic education, the Bauchi state government has earmarked the sum of N100 million to sustain the Northern Education Initiatives (NEI+).

The disclosure was made by the Permanent Commissioner 1 in the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alh Ahmed Idris Hardawa while speaking at a Media Dialogue on Girls’ Education held at the Chartwell Hotel, Bauchi on Wednesday.

According to him, the state government is committed to continuing with the program having recorded tremendous progress during the period the program lasted.

“There is a significant increase in the enrollment of girls in the various schools across the state. In order to maintain the tempo, the government approved allocation of funds for the project which is now known as NEI+.

“The state is backwards in terms of girls’ education, it has been able to produce notable women who have held important offices in the country or are still serving.

“The old Bauchi State now divided into Bauchi and Gombe States is able to produce the number two civil servant in the world in the person of the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations. We are doing our best to improve on the situation,” he said.

Ahmed commended UNICEF through which many interventions have come to Bauchi state over the years, saying that the state will be better off at the end of the various intervention programmes in the educational sector.

He then called on the media to support the programme through enlightenment and Advocacy which will in turn increase the enrollment of more girls in the various schools across the state
