INEC Calls for Improved Security on its Staff, Facilities, as Gunmen Attacks Residence of Kogi REC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for a thorough investigation and enhanced security in the wake of an early morning attack on the residence of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kogi State.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Hon. Chairman of the Commission Rotimi Oyekanmi, who disclosed that the REC’s residence was attacked today Friday 1st December 2023 around 3.30 am, said no life was lost in the attack. According to him armed men engaged the security personnel in a gun battle for over 30 minutes until reinforcement arrived.

“While no lives were lost, properties were destroyed in the ensuing gun battle, a team of combined security personnel have been deployed to protect the residence”. He stated that “this incident occurred a day after a mob besieged INEC’s office in the State.”

The CPS has called for a thorough investigation and enhanced security and protection for the Commission’s personnel and assets in Kogi State.”
