Insecurity–Army Receives UNDP, UN And Sahel Officials
United Nations Development Programme UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Mr. Mohammed Yahya, Senior Political Officer, United Nations Office for West Africal, and Sahel (UNOWAS)made separate visits to the Chief of Army Staff, (COAS) Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru on Tuesday at the Army Headquarters, Abuja.
Mr. Yahya of the UNDP said he came to seek support for stabilization in the region, and discuss ways UNDP can support the objectives of ensuring peace, and stability of the North East.
He maintained That UNDP with the Federal, and State Governments have developed regional stabilization components, with facilities which include Civil Military Coordination that works closely, with the Nigeria Army in the North East, and thanked the Nigeria Army for its support.
Chief of Army Staff was represented by the Chief Of Policy, and Plans, Maj. Gen. BI Ahanatu who appreciated UNDPs activities in volatile areas, like the North East region, and assured that the Army will give its full support to UNDP to make the mandate a success. He expressed appreciation for the organizations visit.
In his own response, the Senior Political Officer of UNOWAS represented by the Senior Human Right, and Political Adviser, Mr. Williams Liforgo, said the visit is to promote peace and security in the west, and central Africa sub regions, stating that security challenges in the Lake Chad Basin has mandated his organization to engage the stakeholders, and to discuss with other members in the sub region, with a view to finding ever lasting solution to the security developmental, and humanitarian challenges in the region.
Responding, the Chief of Army Staff commended the UN for its effort to bringing peace, and stability to the sub region, and admonishes them to always inform the Nigeria Army with its plans, for possible assistance, and collaboration. He also pledged to support all UN programme that is in line with ending insurgency, and all forms of criminality in the sub region. Saying the Army is making concerted effort to bring peace to the Lake Chad Basin.
