Kindness Gives Birth To Kindness: The Untold Story Of Senator Akpabio’s Heart Of Gold
By Anthonia Okwuolise
There are men who shine because of what they wear, and there are men who shine because of who they are. One of such rare men is the most distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, a leader whose kindness and compassion have touched lives far beyond political boundaries. His story reminds us that true greatness is not measured by position or wealth, but by the number of lives one uplifts along the way.
Sometime ago, a young man shared an incredible story about how his life changed completely after a single encounter with Senator Akpabio. The young man, full of dreams and determination, had long admired Akpabio back when he was still the Governor of Akwa Ibom State. His greatest ambition was to study aeronautics in the United States and build a career in aviation, but his biggest challenge was lack of funds.
Driven by faith and courage, he decided to find a way to meet the governor. Through the help of some flight attendants who were inspired by his zeal, he discovered when Akpabio would be flying on a commercial flight. They even helped him with a cabin crew uniform so he could have access to the aircraft.
When the plane took off and reached about 35,000 feet above the ground, the young man gathered his confidence and approached the then-Governor. Standing before him, he said something that caught everyone’s attention. “Your Excellency,” he began, “if this aircraft crashes now, some of you will die as rich men while some of us will die as poor men.”
A little surprised but curious, Akpabio looked at him and asked, “So, how do you want to die?”
Without hesitation, the young man replied, “I want to die a rich man.”
Smiling, Akpabio asked again, “What do you want to do with your life?”
The young man said honestly, “Sir, I want to study aeronautics in the United States, but I don’t have the money to go.”
Right there, midair, Akpabio made a life-changing promise. “When we land,” he said, “follow me.”
True to his word, after the aircraft landed, Senator Akpabio took the young man to the Government House and gave him 85,000 dollars to begin his studies abroad. That single act of kindness changed the young man’s destiny forever.
But the story didn’t end there. Some months later, the young man returned with two of his friends who also had dreams but lacked support. Moved again by their determination, Akpabio extended the same generosity to them, giving each of them the same opportunity to chase their dreams.
The young man, overwhelmed and emotional, asked him one day, “Sir, how can I ever repay you?”
And with a gentle smile, Akpabio replied, “When you make it in life, do the same for others.”
That simple instruction carries a timeless lesson, the true measure of success is not what we accumulate, but how much we contribute to the success of others.
Today, that young man is successful and still shares his story with gratitude. He calls Senator Akpabio “a man with a heart made of gold.” And indeed, he is right. Akpabio doesn’t wear gold, but if you look closely, you will see that he is made of gold.
Behind his boldness is humility, behind his strength is compassion, and behind his achievements is a heart that genuinely cares for people.
This story is more than just an account of generosity, it is a reminder that leadership is not about titles or power, but about touching lives and leaving footprints of kindness wherever one goes.
Senator Godswill Akpabio, a true definition of greatness, a man whose heart shines brighter than gold.
