The successful rescue of Mrs Amina Abubakar, wife of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, from bandits’ captivity in Katsina State is more than another military success story. It is a testament to the resilience, determination, and operational effectiveness of troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA under the leadership of Major General Bemgha Paul Koughna, the 11th General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West).

For 2 Days, uncertainty surrounded the fate of Mrs Abubakar following the tragic death of her husband in captivity. Yet, despite the difficult terrain and the challenges associated with rescue operations in bandit-infested forests, troops refused to relent in their pursuit of the criminal elements responsible for her abduction.

Acting on credible intelligence, troops of the 8 Division Strike Force, supported by the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation into the forests of Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Intelligence reports had indicated that the abducted woman was being held at Tunga Village in Sayaya Ward.

The operation culminated in a fierce encounter between troops and the bandits. Faced with the overwhelming firepower and relentless advance of the military, the criminals fled towards the Zobe Dam axis, abandoning their captive after shooting her in the thigh.

Despite her injuries and significant blood loss, troops swiftly secured her rescue, administered immediate medical attention, and evacuated her for further treatment. The success of the mission underscored the professionalism and courage of the personnel involved, as well as the effectiveness of the synergy between ground forces and the Air Component in conducting intelligence-driven operations.

Military observers note that such operations require patience, precision, and persistence. Rescue missions are among the most delicate military undertakings, particularly when hostages are involved. The ability of the troops to sustain pressure on the bandits while ensuring the survival and recovery of the victim speaks volumes about the growing operational capabilities of troops deployed across the North-West theatre.

For residents of communities around Matazu, the rescue represents more than the recovery of a kidnapped victim. It is a symbol of renewed hope and confidence in ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling bandit enclaves and restoring peace.

Many locals have expressed appreciation for the military’s efforts in denying criminals safe havens within the forests and surrounding communities.

A community elder in the area described the operation as a major relief for residents who have endured years of insecurity.

“The military has demonstrated that these criminals cannot continue to operate freely. The rescue of Mrs Abubakar gives us confidence that the security forces are committed to protecting innocent people and restoring normal life in our communities,” he said.

Another resident noted that the sustained operations in the area have significantly reduced the activities of bandits and restricted their freedom of movement.

“We have seen increased military presence and operations in these forests. The pressure being mounted on the bandits is yielding results. We thank the troops for their sacrifices and commitment,” the resident stated.

Similarly, a youth leader from Sayaya Ward commended the Armed Forces for their determination, describing the rescue as a victory for both the military and affected communities.

“This operation shows that there is no hiding place for criminals. We appreciate the efforts of the Nigerian Army and the Air Force in bringing peace back to our area,” he said.

The rescue operation reflects the broader strategy being implemented by Major General Bemgha Paul Koughna in the fight against terrorism and banditry across the North-West. Through aggressive offensive operations, intelligence-led missions, and close coordination between land and air forces, troops have continued to dismantle criminal networks and deny terrorists freedom of action.

While challenges remain, the successful rescue of Mrs Amina Abubakar serves as a powerful reminder of the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding lives, protecting communities, and ensuring that those who perpetrate acts of terror are relentlessly pursued.

For the people of Matazu and countless communities affected by insecurity, the operation stands as a beacon of hope that peace can be restored and sustained through collective effort, resilience, and unwavering dedication to duty.
