By Urube Peter, Abuja
In a significant move to boost youth development in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has flagged off the construction of a new multi-event sports centre in Kafe District.
This project aims to empower the youth, create employment opportunities, and diversify the FCT’s economy.
Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony on Monday, September 1, 2025, Wike emphasized the evolving role of sports in economic development, citing Brazil’s success in exporting sports talent as an example. The centre will feature various athletic disciplines, including football, basketball, volleyball, lawn tennis, squash, and table tennis, all built to international standards, he said.
Director General of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, commended Wike’s initiative, noting that it aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for sports in Nigeria. The commission plans to develop 40 similar centres across Nigeria, with one located in Abuja
