Troops of the 17 Brigade under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in collaboration with Hybrid Forces, have recorded another significant operational success in Katsina State, foiling a planned terrorist attack on commuters and neutralising eight terrorists during a well-coordinated ambush operation in Bakori Local Government Area.

The successful operation highlights the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven military operations in Nigeria’s North-West, where security forces have continued to intensify efforts to dismantle terrorist and bandit networks threatening lives and livelihoods.

According to operational reports, troops received credible intelligence that terrorists loyal to a notorious kingpin, identified as Idi Abasu Aiki, were planning to attack commuters travelling along the Kakumi–Guga Road. The terrorists were reportedly moving towards the area on five motorcycles, intending to ambush unsuspecting road users.

Acting swiftly on the intelligence, Hybrid Forces and troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA mobilised to the area and laid a carefully planned ambush along the terrorists’ route. Their patience and tactical positioning paid off as the terrorists unknowingly entered the kill zone before they could execute their mission.

The ensuing firefight was brief but decisive. The troops overwhelmed the criminals, neutralising eight terrorists and effectively preventing what could have been another deadly attack on innocent commuters. The operation once again demonstrated the importance of taking proactive measures against criminal elements rather than waiting to respond after attacks have occurred.

Following the successful engagement, troops exploited the area and recovered two AK-47 rifles and five motorcycles belonging to the terrorists. The seizure of the weapons and motorcycles further weakens the operational capability of the group by denying them critical tools used to carry out attacks and move swiftly across difficult terrain.

Perhaps the greatest success of the operation was the prevention of civilian casualties. Rural roads across parts of the North-West have often been targeted by terrorists seeking to abduct travellers, rob commuters and spread fear among local communities. By intercepting the terrorists before they reached their intended victims, the troops not only saved lives but also reinforced public confidence in ongoing military operations.

The operation also reflects the increasing importance of actionable intelligence in modern counter-terrorism campaigns. Timely information enabled security forces to anticipate the terrorists’ movement, prepare an effective response and seize the initiative. Such intelligence-led operations continue to deliver significant results while reducing risks to both civilians and security personnel.

The collaboration between conventional troops and Hybrid Forces also proved crucial. Their combined knowledge of the local terrain, movement routes and community dynamics enhanced operational planning and execution, demonstrating the value of partnerships in addressing complex security challenges.

Following the operation, troops commenced aggressive patrols and continued domination of the general area to prevent any retaliatory attacks against nearby communities. Maintaining pressure on criminal groups after successful engagements is essential to preventing them from regrouping or launching fresh attacks.

The latest success adds to the growing list of operational achievements recorded under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which has continued to adopt an offensive strategy focused on disrupting terrorist activities before they can materialise. Through sustained military pressure, intelligence-led operations and collaboration with local security partners, the operation is steadily reducing the freedom of movement enjoyed by terrorist groups across the North-West.

While security challenges remain, the successful ambush in Bakori Local Government Area is another indication that sustained operational pressure is yielding positive results. As troops continue to dominate the operational environment, the neutralisation of eight terrorists and the recovery of weapons underscore the Nigerian military’s determination to protect lives, secure communities and restore lasting peace across Katsina State and the wider North-West region.
