As the debate for creation of State Police in the country gathers momentum, a former and retired Commissioner of Police (CP) for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Lawrence Alobi, has thrown his weight behind the creation of State Police and the proposed bill on State Police, pending before the National Assembly.

He also called for the establishment of a Police Trust Fund to assist States that may struggle to fund their Police.

While granting interview to selected journalists in his office recently, Alobi, who is the Principal Partner at Lawrence Alobi & Co and Managing Director/CEO of Hi-Tech Security Services and Training Limited, shared his insights on the bill.

According to Alobi; “societies normally evolve, and as security evolves; some dynamics also come up.”

He believed that the establishment of State Police could be a step in the right direction, but noted that some States may require additional support to effectively fund their Police Force.

To address this concern, Alobi proposed the establishment of a Police Trust Fund, which would provide financial assistance to states that need it.

This, he believes, would help ensure that all states can maintain effective police force, regardless of their financial capacity.

As the Senate Committee on Constitution Review continues to deliberate on the bill, Alobi’s contribution provides a valuable perspective on the potential benefits and challenges of State Police.

His proposal for a Police Trust Fund highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to policing in Nigeria, taking into account the varying capacities of different States.
