The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has advocate the need for Government at all levels to equipped healthcare system with sporting facilities for personnel recreation.

The unit chairman of NANNM Comrade Victoria Samson Bayee who made the appeal believed that if Government and hospital management across the country key into such initiative it would always help in building the mental capacity of nurses.

Comrade Bayee made this known to our correspondent shortly after a novelty football match on Friday between JUTH and Plateau State Specialists Hospital where the game ended 2-0 in favour of Plateau State Specialists Hospital at Leadership centre, Shere Hills football ground Lamingo, Jos the state capital as part of activities to mark the 2021 international Nurses week celebration.

She said:”We as nurses we encourage exercise to our patients because exercise help in the circulation of blood. And you know that circulation of blood carry within oxygen, nutrients that help to rejuvenate the born out tissues.

“When disease enters an individual the tissues are overwhelmed and they tend to die and they are dead we encourage them for active exercise. So this is part of an active exercise where they have blood that can be able to function very well, the blood that is in circulation so that it can carry oxygen, nutrients and other substances like hormones to be able to aid the healing of the patient.

” As nurses we do find it difficult to find time like this for active exercise because of the schedule of work. You know we work 24/7. And work 24/7 means every time the nurse would be there with a patients in the hospital and as such it diminishes active exercise as such as this except one is determine to do it.

“And when you are determined to do it you have to discipline yourself to be able to carry on. And in carrying on with this exercise you have to keep aside other time that you are supposed to rest and engage for exercise. So, nurses actually finds it difficult to have something like this.

” As you can see one of our challenges is that we do not have a pitch, or sport complex in the hospital where we can have this kind of activities.

“I think if the management of the hospitals can help with sport complex or recreation center where we can have exercise when you’re at work or when you close (indoor and outdoor) when you close from work you can go and recreate, release your brain, you rejuvenated your heart and above all you will be active and mentally sound to care for your patients”.
