Nigerian Army Activates Three New Battalions in Zamfara
The Nigerian Army has activated three new Infantry Battalions in Zamfara State as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and improve rapid response to emerging threats across the state.
The newly operationalised formations are the 12 Infantry Battalion in Bakura, 23 Infantry Battalion in Kaura Namoda, and 28 Infantry Battalion in Anka.
The General Officer Commanding 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Maj.-Gen. B.P. Koughna, said the activation would expand the Army’s operational coverage and enhance security within the battalions’ respective Areas of Responsibility.
In a statement issued by the Acting Brigade Commander, Col. Umaru, the Army said it remained committed to sustained operations aimed at protecting law-abiding citizens and restoring lasting peace across Zamfara.

Umaru urged the newly deployed troops to maintain discipline, professionalism and vigilance while operating within their constitutional mandate and established Rules of Engagement.
He also called for stronger collaboration among security agencies, traditional institutions and local communities, stressing that timely and credible intelligence was critical to successful security operations.
The Acting Brigade Commander further charged the troops to remain responsive to the security needs of communities within their areas of responsibility and maintain close engagement with local stakeholders.
The Emirs of Bakura, Anka and Kaura Namoda separately commended the Nigerian Army for establishing the additional battalions, describing the move as an important step towards strengthening security and restoring normalcy across the state.
The traditional rulers pledged continued support through community mobilisation, cooperation and information sharing with security agencies.
The activation is expected to further expand the Army’s presence and operational reach in Zamfara, particularly in areas requiring faster response to security threats.
