In furtherance of it’s goal of achieving zero tolerance to period poverty, the Project Pad A Girl Foundation had a one day sensitization programme to celebrate the World Menstrual Hygiene Day at Unity Hall, Government House , Asaba

Delivering her welcome address, the convener of the programme and the founder of Project Pad A Girl Foundation, Udoka Anita Ikebuwa, thanked everybody for coming and said that her foundation is geared towards ending period poverty. She said period poverty is usually experienced in low income communities where girls cannot afford money to buy sanitary pads thereby using tissue paper during their period.

Speaking further, she said her organization has been going round from time to time , to distribute sanitary pads to communities that are experiencing period poverty for the past three years, adding that they have distributed over two hundred thousand (200,000) sanitary pads to various secondary schools within this period. Finally , she said they will not relent in their effort to achieve a zero tolerance to period poverty.

Also speaking , the Hon. Commissioner For Health, in Delta State, Dr Onojame Ogeneogaga, represented by the Coordinator Of Public Health, Dr Frances Wenyimi, said period poverty is not just lack of menstrual hygiene, but also a violation of a girls menstrual and personal hygiene, as well as anything that is essential for the girl child to blossom from a girl to a woman, maintaining that it does not just cause social setback, but also mental retardation.

Dr Wenyimi noted that her Ministry has been in collaboration and engagement with various CSOs, NGOs and Faith Based Organizations FBO as well as other stakeholders to ensure that enough awareness and sensitization is made by providing sanitary pads to girls and communities that are experiencing period poverty through sanitary facilities

Meanwhile, a Director in the State Epidemiologist, Public Health, Dr. Mildred . N. Okowa-Igumbor has suggested that it’s advisable to use sanitary pads between 4-6hrs to avoid infection. She emphasised that lack of sanitary facilities like, rest rooms, lack of sanitary products, improper refuse disposal , lack of good personal hygiene as well as lack of menstrual knowledge also contribute to period poverty.

Other speakers at the event are , Ifeoma Lynda Omenugba, Mrs. Olivia Onyemobi and Ada Africa Udegboka.

Menstrual Poverty is when a girl cannot afford sanitary pads to take care of her period and it’s always common among girls of age bracket 10-19. The World Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual event to create awareness and highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene, as well as raise awareness about issues of those who don’t have sanitary products. The Project Pad A Girl Foundation is working towards sensitizing the people and achieving a zero tolerance to menstrual poverty in Nigeria. The theme of the programme is ” Distrupting Period Poverty In Rural Communities Across Delta State”
