Chief Of Defence Staff Urges Corps Members To Stay Alert, Be Security Conscious In Bauchi NYSC Camp

In a deliberate move to strengthen the safety and security of young Nigerians serving their country, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has urged corps members to be more alert, conscious, and responsible as they go about their national assignments. This call came during a special security awareness and sensitization program organized for corps members at the National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp in Ganjuwa, Bauchi State.

Represented by Group Captain I.A. Bukar, General Musa reiterated the military’s strong commitment to ensuring the protection of all corps members across Nigeria. He explained that the security sensitization exercise was initiated to equip corps members with the necessary knowledge and awareness to help them stay safe in their respective places of primary assignment. The initiative, according to him, is also part of the military’s broader effort to promote peace, unity, and national cohesion among Nigerian youths.
Addressing the corps members, Group Captain Bukar noted that the purpose of the visit went beyond mere security matters. He stated that it was also aimed at encouraging corps members to actively contribute to national development, help counter disinformation, and strengthen trust between the Nigerian military and the civilian population. He explained that corps members, as educated young citizens, play a vital role in sustaining peace and promoting unity within the country.

He emphasized that security begins with individual awareness and responsibility. He urged the corps members to be mindful of their surroundings at all times, stay informed about happenings within their communities, and always think of their safety before making decisions. He further advised them to be cautious when sharing personal details or sensitive information on social media, as such actions could expose them or others to unnecessary risks.
Group Captain Bukar also encouraged corps members to develop the habit of reporting strange or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or security personnel. He pointed out that being vigilant and taking quick action when danger is suspected can help prevent harm and protect lives within the community. “Your courage can save not just your life, but the lives of many others. When you see something unusual or suspicious, don’t ignore it. Go to the nearest police station or security office and report it immediately,” he said.

He went on to highlight the importance of maintaining mutual understanding and cooperation between the corps members and the local communities they are serving in. According to him, corps members should strive to build good relationships with the people in their host environments and always act as ambassadors of peace and development. He assured them that the Nigerian military remains fully committed to working hand-in-hand with the NYSC and other relevant bodies to ensure that all corps members complete their service year safely.
The awareness program was met with enthusiasm from the corps members, who expressed appreciation for the visit and the valuable security tips shared by the military representatives. Many of them described the session as timely and enlightening, especially in light of recent national security challenges.
The sensitization exercise ultimately reinforced the message that the responsibility of ensuring safety does not rest on the military alone, but on every citizen, including the corps members themselves. By being alert, responsible, and cooperative, corps members can help contribute to a safer and more peaceful Nigeria.
