Commissioner of Police Rivers State to pay Orphanage owner #20m for illegal detention
The Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has ordered the Commissioner of Police, and the disband eagle crack unit of the State Command to pay the sum of #20m damages for parading a woman running an orphanage.
In February 2020, the police paraded Chinelo Odiakosa Mmake the owner of Tender Life Initiative Foundation, with her workers for running a baby factory.
After Chinelo was released from the police custody, she quickly took the police authority to the Court for alleged violation of fundamental human right.
The Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Mohammed Abubakar, in his judgment granted the seven reliefs sought by the claimant, and also condemned the practice of parading suspects without proper investigation.
The complainants lawyer, Barr. Henry Ekine spoke to the journalist shortly after the court proceedings, he said the court has risen to always protect the right of the citizens.
Barr. Ekine said, the court declared the arrest, and detention as illegal, and a violation of her fundamental human right.
The court declared the public parading of the arrestees, as also a violation of the fundamental human right of those citizens. A declaration was made to the effect, that their dignity was actually violated.
Chinelo who said after the ruling, that God had vindicated her from this mess of public disgrace, and she would continue to pursue her dream of assisting the young women, who need her assistance.
