The Evangelical Church Winning All, ECWA, and Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria has tasked President Muhammadu Buhari and Sokoto State Government to ensure that those behind the gruesome murdered of late miss Deborah Yakubu, a 200 level Home Economic student college of education, Shehu Shagari, Sokoto were not only arrested but face the full wrath of the law.
The duo who lend their voices to condemned the senseless killing, charged Government at all levels to make sure justice for late Deborah Yakubu prevails devoid of sentiment.
This was contained in a statement by ECWA President Rev.Dr. Stephen Baba Panya and the National President of the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria, Sir Henry Yunkwap and made available to Journalists in Jos.
According to the ECWA President, ” while our faith in this country is still very strong because we know that there are laws that ought to govern the conduct of all citizens, like it is in every civilized clime, we are at a loss which provision under our nation’s jurisprudence permits the brutal, senseless and shameful killing and setting ablaze of a fellow Nigerian by any misguided group, under whatever pretext with no one held accountable.
“The least that Nigerians of all persuasions demand of the Nigerian government at all levels, if its legitimacy must not be put to jeopardy, is the guarantee of security to life and property and the dispensation of justice, equity and fair play to all regardless of religious, ethnic, social or political affiliation.
“The brutal killing and burning of Deborah by some misguided Muslim students is nothing short of overt criminality which we at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) roundly condemn.
“We therefore call on the Sokoto State government under the leadership of His Excellency, Aminu Tambuwal to be deliberate in ensuring that no step is left to ensure that justice is not only seen to be done, but that it is indeed done.
“We also call on Mr. President, Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the Inspector General of Police and all relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that all the perpetrators of this dastardly and despicable act are not only fished out, but that they are brought to justice according to law.”
However, the President of Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria, said “we want to remind the Federal Government that this is not the first time such barbaric act is taking place in the country all in the name of religion and the reason we are witnessing same now is because the expected action to serve as deterrent was never taken as the perpetrators were often left to go scot-free.
“Enough of this act of violence and insensitive behavior of our Muslim youth. God remains powerful and can never be represented by any mortal called human being. Our religious leaders must preach that always as no human being can take life he never created no matter the circumstances.
“We want to note here that nobody has the monopoly of violence as such our youth must not be allowed to be used as agents of destruction under any religious guise.
“We, therefore, call on Christians to remain calm and resolute in leaving the faith especially in a time like this as emphasized by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Kuka in his press release,” he added
