Military had given an extensive warning in this nation wide protest that’s about to commence in Nigeria, that it might lead to a state of chaos and anarchy, and the military would not fold its arms and be watching.
The Director Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba disclosed this in a by-weekly press briefing held Thursday 25 July 2024. He said intelligence gathered by the military shows that the planned Protest may be exploited by some hoodlums that the military would not stand idle watching the situation unfold into state of anarchy.
Buba said, ” The military seized this opportunity to warn the populace that the nation is going through severe security challenges and social unrest occasioned by years of insurgency, banditry and economic sabotage, and can’t afford situation turning like that of Kenya.
He continued, ” The protest is to let you know what is happening in Kenya. And what’s happening there in terms of protest, is not protest but violence, and the matter remains unresolved. Based on what has been gathered, there are plans by some hoodlums to hijack the protest and turn it into violet situation. And if it turns to, I want to let you know, what may likely happen.
“Believe me, if this happens, it is going to be nothing, but a state of anarchy, and lawlessness. We have been seeing this kind of situation in other parts of the world when we go for peacekeeping operations, military would not stand by and allow anarchy to befall this nation Nigeria.
“This is our constitutional responsibility to safeguard this nation, and to make sure it doesn’t happen because it’s not what we watch in Nollywood films, or whatsoever”.
Buba disclosed that military’s involvement clearly stated in the constitution with the rules, regulations and functions of the armed forces. He said the citizens have the constitutional rights to peaceful protest, but not to cause anarchy and chaos in the country.
