By Daniel Agada, Jos
A High Court seating in Jos, Plateau State capital has on Tuesday ordered for the reinstatement of executive chairman of Langtang North Local Government Council, Hon. Joshua U. Laven to complete his three years tenure.
Laven who had one year left in his three tenure couldn’t complete his tenure because of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) conducted elections across the 17 LGA on October 9, 2021.
The presiding judge, Justice Ishaku Kunda ruled that the tenure of the chairman will begin to count from the day he was sworn in.
Kunda pointed out that the relief sought by the defense counsel can’t yield any positive result because there was abuse the defendants (PLASIEC) conducting election into chairmanship seat had flouted the court order .
He revealed that the tenure of Langtang north Local Government Chairman will expire on the 9th October, 2022, “so whatever decision taken by the PLASIEC is null and void.”
He stated that the exercise of embarking on conducting election into chairmanship seat was unnecessary a wasteful exercise by the 1st and 4th defendants, describing it as “impunity and lack of respect for rules of law”.
According to him, “Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission disrespect the judiciary after the interlocutory order stopping them and their agent from coming to conduct election into chairmanship seat of Langtang north”.
Speaking shortly after the verdict, Hon. Joshua U. Laven described the victory as a landmark for democracy.
Laven said the victory is something that would stand the test of time.
He acknowledged that though they were always surrounded by trials and temptations, but by the special grace of God they would overcome them and continue providing much needed dividends of democracy at the grassroot level.
