Plateau: Parlong Advocates For Community Leaders Forum To End Jos Crisis

The former special adviser to the Governor of Plateau State on peace and conflict resolution, Barr. Timothy Parlong has called for the Constitution of community leaders forum to put to an end the 20 years lingering crisis in Jos.

The elder statesman, Parlong believed that if such step have been taking it would go a long way in tackling vicious cycle of conflict that may likely to emanate in the state.

Barr. Parlong shed his thought when featured as guest speaker in a seminar titled:” the September 2001 Jos Crisis and its enigmatic nature 20 years”, organized by Nerat Integrated Services, held in Jos the state capital.

He said for 20 years now, with three successive president yet the Plateau crisis still lingers.

“The crisis has really continue changing because of the colouration and misinterpretation of the true and fundamental nature of the hostilities.

“Continue regarding the conflict on the basis of religion portends dangers in the embers of our society.

“Moreover, the crisis persisted as a result of gross failure of the state to manage security, poverty and poor state of the economy as well as the radicalization of communal royalties”, Parlong stated.

He said is high time for Government to study the situation very critically and provide solutions that would nip the crisis on the bud.

Reverend Samuel Goro lamented that anytime there were red signals the security would tell you that their on top of the situation but the reverse is the case.

He pinpoint some factors that contributed to the conflicts on the Plateau which includes; blame game among the ruling class, living in segregation communities, weak response to early warning sign, non compensation to victims (trauma because healing) as well as non prosecution of perpetrators to serve as deterrence.

He also expressed optimism that Plateau will regain its loss glory as a home of peace and tourism in near future.

However, Dr. Jonah Lomak, the executive director of Nerat Integrated Services and managing director peace chef, revealed that the aimed of the seminar is about the restoration of glory of Plateau State. ” At the end of the exercise we are going to come up with a communique, and we will follow it to the later to ensure peace in Plateau state.

“So we hope that at the end of this seminar we will able to gather sufficient ideas, strategies and solutions to the problems of Jos crisis and hopefully we’re going to implement them.

“What were doing is celebration of peace month and commemoration of Jos September 7, 2001, and the international Peace day coming up on the 21st September. We have a lot of programmes and hope that at the end of it were been able to come with a solution from the field and to implement them.

“The Plateau state Government is fully involved in the programme and we hope that this synergy will come to success”! Lomak acknowledged.
